About the name Winifred
Winifred anglicises the Welsh Gwenfrewi, a seventh-century saint whose holy well still draws pilgrims to Flintshire. The name has been out of favour since the 1920s, but the nickname Winnie has been quietly doing the work of rehabilitating it.
